Social Justice is an issue spread worldwide with many definitions and interpretations. My testimony to social justice is taking into action for a meaningful change and equality to others despite from our physical appearance, race, ethnicity, religion, education, economic status and culture. In addition, social justice is more than a collective movement, is taking action against those injustices by creating awareness and struggling together. When I decided to attend Social Justice High School my initial taught about the school was that the curriculum would be based on law issues to hopefully become a lawyer or a politician. However, as I took classes I was amused of all the new knowledge of social justice issues that were embedded into all my classes. From this experience I learn that justice doesn't always have to connect to the law but can also be connect to different types of subjects and ideas.
In addition, I also learned that there are obstacles when trying to face or achieve social justice. For example, community members in Little Village and North Lawndale began to fight against CPS to have a high school build in the community. However, community members were ignored and made it a difficult challenge for the community to get their voice heard. Furthermore, community members work to together and were able to get passed the obstacle and succeed even if the odds were high against them.
Moreover, there are strategies needed when achieving social justice. They are usually protests, meetings, and rallies. To add on, our educational intelligence is also needed to achieve social justice because it’s about negotiating to have our voices heard in a nonviolent action, not a violence action that would create chaos. My role in the struggle of social justice is to continue to apply social justice in our everyday lives and continue the action of fighting against injustices issues together. I wish to major in economics and hopefully one day start an organization to work with community members to fight for justice and change. My topic of Gentrification connects to social justice because low income residents are being taking advantage of and taking their rights away due to urban development in poorer communities.
