The issue of gentrification over the years continues to arise and there has been an increase of people being affected predominantly low-income people. In the other hand, United States has competed internationally against other counties across to globe. In the United States there have been many cities and communities transform through the process of gentrification. The gentrification phenomenon affects the United States by the high increase of crimes and citizens living in poverty. To begin, an example of gentrification here in the United States is in city of New Orleans. “In 2005, New Orleans suffer a downfall because of the natural disaster that hurricane Katrina cause”. It has been a difficult time for New Orleans to rebuild all damages as well the people living in the area. Unfortunately, many residents in the community don’t have the resources to rebuild their homes and had to relocate. However, many residents of New Orleans decided to stay and face the struggles in the rebuilding process. New Orleans had many abandoned houses and buildings but soon developers saw an opportunity to make profit of these building available. As of today many communities in New Orleans have change and values of property have increased as well the lifestyle of living has become costly.
To add on, another example of gentrification here in the United State is in the city of New York. According to City Limits, New York City is “facing a homeless crisis worse than any time since the Great Depression”. This means there many people out there who don’t have resources to survive. Also funding is being cut for homeless people and housing is no longer affordable. In addition, since all the renovation the city of New York has added rents have increased and has made it difficult for families to survive. Life in New York City has changed and no longer lower income class have the opportunity live in New York City. Over the years previous residents have been forced to go out to welcome the higher income class.
In the meantime, another example of gentrification here in the United States is in downtown of the city of Los Angeles. Long time back downtown LA was a community where many Latinos cultures live. However, “Latinos communities are not always high profile due to the fact of gangs, crime, and people living in poverty”. In other words, living in Latinos communities are less expensive than other high profile communities. Once again, developers who are always on the lookout for a golden opportunity to generate profit were buying buildings and houses within the Latino communities. As developers rebuild houses and buildings values of property in the area started to increase. It then later attracted high income people to live in the area. As the property of homes in the area continues to increase, rents also became to increase. In which led to low income residents to relocate and leave their homes behind.
In conclusion, gentrification has impacted the United States from financial reasons to resident health. However, there are organizations that can help and prevent from communities to gentrify. Right of the City is an organization that helps and builds awareness to notify people about the gentrification process and other issues that may concern for the city and the communities.
