How is it connected to social justice?
Gentrification connects to a social justice issue by the displacement of low income resident who are forced to move out of their neighborhoods. Just because low income residents don’t have money to afford the new cost of living in their neighborhoods it doesn't justify of removing them from their original homes. All income residents are welcome in our society. We all depend from low income residents to high income residents to make a contribution to our society. However, we residents should be treated equally with fairness. It’s unfair, seeing residents being displaced from their homes. How is it connected to Environmental Science? Gentrification connects to environmental science by the topic environmental racism in our communities. Communities who are being gentrified tend to have factories in their community. These factories tend to pollute the community by the release of chemical into our atmosphere. Here in back yards the community of Pilsen and Little Village had two power plants called Fisk and Crawford. Fisk and Crawford have highly polluted air that residents in the communities of Little Village and Pilsen unfortunately have to breathe. The pollutants that both power plants have released are NOx and Sox. The two power plants are responsible for the large increase in air pollution in Pilsen and Little Village over the past years as well as for the many health incidents that have risen due to the inhalation of the contaminated air. |
