In the Chicago area there are some neighborhoods that have experience gentrification. However, gentrification in Chicago continues to happen impacting many people's lives. For example, the community of Pilsen in Chicago has experienced some kind of gentrification. Back in the days, Pilsen was predominantly a Latino neighborhood with lots of culture and pride that was passed down through generations. Over a few years, there has been a transformation in the community. New stores have been building in the area and as well condos buildings have been created. In additions, “there has been a huge increase of a banks and coffee shops along the neighborhood”.
Furthermore, the rents of living in the Pilsen have increased. When I was eight years old I used to live in Pilsen. I remember that my parent would pay around $300 for rent. However, my family decided to relocate to the Little Village community because they have found a better home for the family at a convenient price. In the meantime, my other family members decided to stay. Now that I am 18 years old, I ask my family member how much do they pay for rent. As of today, my family members pay around $800 a month. I was amused because the price of the rent in the area has over double the price than it was 10 years ago. Not only, the Pilsen neighborhood has changed but the population of residents has changed during the years. There are more high income people moving into the area since 2010. If this pattern continues to occur I think in about 10 years the Latino culture in the neighborhood would drastically change.
To add on, another example of gentrification in the city of Chicago is in Logan square community. “Logan square community has become a fast-changing neighborhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side”. In that mind, Logan square has become a totally new neighborhood than it was before. Crime rates and robbery rates have decreased dramatically due the impact of lower income moving out and high income moving in. In addition, rents in Logan square have increased at a time high. More and more condos buildings have been built in the area. In addition, large supermarket stores have also been constructed in the area. It’s a matter this trend would continue to spread in the city of Chicago.
All in all, the issue of gentrification causes problems for the city of Chicago. One problem that can be address that impacts the city of Chicago is the gangs’ crime in lower income communities. Instead of using funding to build condos the money should be spent to have security in low income communities. Having more security in these low income communities can decrease the numbers of gangs crime committed each year and save the lives of many people. However, likely we have community centers in our neighborhoods that have started to teach the gentrification to lower income residents. Teaching the residents of the gentrification process can help stop gentrification in many communities.
