Gentrification has become a global context for many years in many parts of the world. It has spread and continues to spread affecting lives of people. For example, a country in Europe called Estonia has experienced a renovation of gentrification. About 20 years ago, Estonia was a terrified and dangerous place to live. “Murdered rates in Estonia were as high as Mexico murdered rates are today”. As a result, people from Estonia move out and abandoned their homes. Furthermore, companies and developers bought these abandoned houses to renovate and generate profit. In couple of years the life in Estonia has change and has increase the value of the area. Many people then decided to live in Estonia. As more people came in bars and cafes are flourishing in the area. However, people who moved to Estonia where mainly highly and middle class people. Residents who originally lived in Estonia could no longer afford to move back in because it became more expensive to live in Estonia than it was before.
To add on, another example of gentrification occurring around the world is in the eastside downtown of Vancouver, Canada. The eastside downtown of Vancouver, Canada has faced a transformation that has caused outrage to the public who live in the area. According to the Canadian Press, ‘the transformation of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is marked by the appearance of cafes, grocery stores and high-priced salons”. In addition, the adding of condo buildings in which it has lead to an increase of value of land and property along the area. Residents living in the area were outrage and had no choice than to move out or to protest against new upcoming businesses and the government. A protest that became viral in the eastside community was a homeless person name Dave who went 36 days on a hunger strike against gentrification. Many residents admired Dave’s sacrifice. However, the struggle of living in the eastside downtown of Vancouver, Canada continues to grow.
In addition, another example of gentrification occurring around the world is in a small community called Marias located in Paris, France. Over the years, “the community Marias has experienced many urban development projects that have arisen to the issue gentrification”. In the beginning Marais was a small community of working class residents. However, developers and government created revitalization projects in which has lead to renovating monuments, new museums and creating a safe protected security in the area. As years passed, outsiders move in the community and the population as well the value of properties in the area began to increase. Residents who originally lived in the communities were then forced to leave their homes because it became expensive. Soon, Marias became a well know place for higher income people to live. However, the culture of Marias originally hold was lost.
To analyze, Gentrification has happen all over the world from small communities to large cities. Furthermore, the same results occur in the gentrification process from the rebuilding of cities till the displacement of residents and loss of culture in the environment.
